パンティング punting

先週末は学生たちと一緒にパンティングに行きました。といってもピンと来ない人のために簡単に説明します。パント（punt）と呼ばれる平底の四角の船で浅瀬を漕ぐことをパンティングといいます。パンティングではボートのオール（oar）のようなものはなく、poleと呼ばれる棒を使って、川底を押しながら舟を進めるのが特徴です。
今回、初めてPuntingに挑戦したけれど、最初はpoleの扱いに四苦八苦。Poleは木製で直径5cm程度、長さは3mにも及びます。結構重くて大変でした。でもだんだん慣れてきたら思うようにこぐことができて楽しくなってきた♪
また、友人や学生とPuntに乗りに行きたいな。

We went punting with students in the lab last weekend. A punt is a flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow. The punt is designed for use in small rivers or other shallow water. The punter generally moves the boat by pushing against the river bed with a pole, not by a oar.
Though this was the first time for punting, I got to know how to control the punt at last. I would like to go punting with my friends again soon.
